Hours required cosmetic restoration

Beitrag von FiatDinoInLasVegas »

Hello, My first post on this forum. Thanks to the guy that mentioned dinov6.de over at the yahoo list. Sorry that I can only use English (or Portugues).

I have owned a 1971 Fiat Coupe for over 20 years. Last 10 it sits in garage, and soon I plan to restore it. It is never going to be a show car. It is only for weekend pleasure drives.

In Las Vegas, Nevada I am only 4 to 5 hours away from the great automotive capital that is Southern California! Therefore, there are several restoration specialists that would be qualified to work on this car. So, what I am trying to determine is the cost. I will want to have the suspension renewed (steering box is very worn), new tires (about $2,700 U.S.) fuel tank restored, and very minor interior issues (headliner, etc). The body will probably need a little touch up, and realign doors, and finally repainted. I don't want to spend more than necessary on paint, otherwise I will be afraid anytime anyone gets close to the car!

Engine has had some work done, and probably will be OK.

I think that's about it. Anyone restored their Fiat lately? How many hours were required?

Welcome to the forum! Great to see that people from all around the world start to contribute here.
Regarding your issues, suspension parts are available and not too expensive. The only problem might be the steering box. Good and used parts are hard to source, new steering boxes are not available as far as I know. Reworking a worn steering box is possible, but can be expensive.
You already know the price of the tires. I assume this is the price for Michelin XWX. One of the rare things that are much more expensive in the states than in Germany, as it seems. Maybe some more reasonable alternatives are available. However, I'd take the XWXs since these are the perfect tires for the Dino.
A fuel tank restoration should also be no problem. Rebushing the doors is also possible without much effort.
Unfortunately, I don't have a clue about the workshop cost in the states. Maybe we get some American contributers here who can give you some figures or even workshop recommendations.

Hey Tobi,

Thanks for your comments. I might not even have the car repainted right away. New bushings for the doors definitely would be nice, and the few other things I mentioned. What is your car?

I have the same car. Also a car with patina for driving and not a showcar.
